DOS Ends TCN Processing

On September 6, 2025, the Department of State (DOS) announced that, effective immediately, applicants for U.S. nonimmigrant visas (NIVs) should schedule their visa interview appointments only at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality or residence. In other words, the DOS is doing away with "third country national" (TCN) processing, which has been a well-accepted practice for decades. Many international professionals utilized TCN visa processing by taking brief trips to Canada or Mexico instead of traveling to their home country. Also, those who frequently travel for work to countries other than their home country could previously apply in any country instead of having to go to their home country.
